Asparagus plants
Easy to grow and to look after our asparagus crowns are the perfect solution for home growing. Eat your own fresh asparagus for 10 years after planting your asparagus crowns.
SPRING IS THE BEST TIME TO PLANT ASPARAGUS CROWNS
We have a variety of asparagus crowns to choose from.
A. GIJNLIM: A very well established Dutch Hybrid, all male variety that has proven itself over the years. A mid-season variety producing high yields of quality spears
B. GUELPH: Guelph Millenium from Ontario in Canada is a variety that is becoming well established in the UK. A hybrid, male dominant variety, it tolerates low temperatures well and performs exceptionally under dry conditions (as last season). A mid to late season variety this will continue producing quantity and quality at the end of the season.
We still recommend Gijnlim as our preferred variety, however if growing 30+ crowns , Guelph will prove to complement Gijnlim at the back end of the season.
Asparagus crowns- FAQ
Q. When can I take the first cut.
A. Our asparagus crowns can be cut for three weeks in the first year after planting.
Q. Why is spring planting best?
A. Asparagus crowns are best lifted in early spring and stored at 2-5 degrees C and replanted when they will grow away immediately. Lifting and storing in a heated retail outlet reduces vigour and chances of success.
Q. Why are our asparagus crowns 1 year old?
A. These suffer less damage on lifting and replanting to the fine root structures than 2 year olds.
Q. Why asparagus crowns and not young asparagus plants?
A. Asparagus Crowns are more robust, quicker and more reliable to establish and will crop earlier.
Q. Why do we recommend these varieties?
A. Over the last 21 years we have been growing 15 to 20 acres every year of green asparagus. These varieties give us maximum production and premium quality.
Q Why are our asparagus crowns better?
A. They come from gaurenteed healthy stock, grown on fresh ground. They are substantial plants, 75-100 grammes in weight with an abundance of 12 to 14" roots.
Q. How and when do I order my asparagus crowns?
A. This page will have details on varieties and prices, together with advice on planting and plant spacing. Ordering is possible from November, on-line here with Paypal or by cheque, downloading the order form which will be accessible from this page.
Q. When shall I get my asparagus crowns?
A. Asparagus Crowns will be lifted, weather permitting end of March and will be despatched in April directly by 24hr carrier or by First Class Post.
Q. When can I take the first cut.
A. Dutch Hybrids can be cut for three weeks the first year after planting.

“You kindly supplied me with 40 asparagus crowns last spring. I had never seen such gorgeous crowns and got them well bedded into good old fashioned muck ----- Growth last summer was staggering, with up too a dozen 4ft stems from some crowns, so we are looking forward to our first picking in a few weeks. Hugh Donald from Chippenham”
